The Dangers of Using Conventional Deodorants

Posted by Carmen Chu on

Summer is approaching and we all know what that means. Yucky, hot, sticky weather.

Sweating profusely is awful but what’s worse is body odour.  In 2018, the Personal Hygiene market in Hong Kong mounted to a whopping $163.4 million and is expected to grow annually by 1.6% until 2023.

However, more and more reports are showing that the conventional commercial brands of deodorants are toxic and can lead to serious health conditions.

Here’s A Few Things You Need to Be Aware of…

a) Toxic Chemicals

Source: Organics

Have you ever seen the back of the label on your deodorants?  Just look at that list of unpronounceable ingredients entering our bloodstream without any bodily processes to help us filter them out!  There are mainly 5 chemicals you need to be wary of when purchasing your deodorant.

1. Parabens (Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Benzyl, and Butyl)

  • This is probably the most prevalent ingredient found in everyday cosmetic products, including deodorant
  • Parabens have been linked to breast cancer, disturb hormonal balance (mimics estrogen)

2. Aluminium Compounds (Aluminum chloralhydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex gly)

  • Clog your sweat ducts and also mimics estrogen - promoting growth of breast cancer cells
3. Silica
  • Known to irritant skin and contaminated with crystalline quartz that is a carcinogen (cancer causing substance)

4. Talc
    • If Talc contains asbestiform fibers, this is also a carcinogen

    5. Propylene Glycol
      • Can cause allergic reactions and considered a neurotoxin, which may cause kidney and liver damage

      b) Preventing Sweat Can Actually Be a Bad Thing

This is more specific to antiperspirants, which are basically personal care products that block your sweat glands so you don’t perspire.  However, sweating is actual a very natural, vital bodily process that helps us to detoxify and stay cool. It’s important for proper immune function, prevent diseases caused by high toxic levels, and skin health (acne, blackheads, etc.)

      c) They Actually Become Less Effective Over Time

It’s kind of like when they tell you to not take so much medicine and let your immune system do the work.   This is because our bodies can become extremely adaptable. So that’s why you feel like you need more and more just to get the same effect and overtime, the product will eventually become ineffective.   Your body will eventually find a way to work around the aluminum and other active ingredients and it won’t be able to prevent perspiration anymore.

      So Why Go Natural?

There are other reasons to use natural deodorants  other than avoiding those dangers we mentioned above.   More and more companies are coming out with deodorants made with plant-based ingredients (all pronounceable) that are actually GOOD for you.   Common ingredients in natural products such as coconut butter and shea butter can actually improve the skin in your underarms. If witch hazel is found in your deodorant, this can also help shrink your pores and smooth razor burn!

Also, natural deodorants don’t block your pores.   They actually allow the good bacteria on your skin to do its job.  Body odor occurs when sweat is mixed in with the bacteria on your skin.  Natural deodorants help to control the bacteria, as opposed to clogging sweat glands and killing all the good and bad bacteria on your skin.
