What is a Tempeh Starter?

Tempeh is a traditional Indonesian fermented product. It is an acquired taste but once you start to like it you can get addicted to it - just like every other fermented foods!
Raprima tempeh starter is a rice flour based tempeh starter inoculated with Rhizopus Oligosporus, produced in a controlled, totally safe environment and regularly tested. This  starter is suitable to be used to make most types of tempeh, including soy tempeh, chickpea tempeh, rice tempeh, barley tempeh and any of the pulses and seeds. It is NON GMO and animal product free so its totally safe to be used in vegan and vegetarian cooking.

Why it’s good for you?

Tempeh is made from whole beans. Therefore there will be a higher content of protein, fiber and vitamins compared to tofu. Tempeh is a good source of vegan protein and also the fermentation process makes the legumes easier to digest and absorb the micro and macro nutrients.

I love that its non GMO

But I'm not sure about this one, it seems like the starter is not very effective for me. I've used it 3 separate times now and each time the finished tempeh is only half covered in spores leaving the rest as loose beans. I tried to leave it longer but then all the beans started to smell bad and became mushy. I noticed that the ingredients on the tempeh starter mentioned rice flour, It makes me think maybe I just used a spoonful of rice flour with a few tempeh making bacteria.

Come join us at our Tempeh-making Class! Hosted by our very own Founder, not only will she be teaching with several types of beans but recipes with the fermented Tempeh too! Of course, you will be bringing home your own Tempeh and sit back for the results at home!

Hopefully not just beginner’s luck

Well I wasn’t sure I’d be successful as it seemed a temperamental process, but... I’m very pleased with the results 👏🏽 Wish I could post a photo.
I’d like to try fermenting okara with it next - black oncom. So many possibilities 😊
