Vilarnau Trencadís Edition DO CAVA Brut Reserva - 750ml
The VILARNAU CAVAS date from 1949 and were located in the town centre of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia, 40km from the city of Barcelona, and has been part of the Gonzalez Byass family of wines since 1982.The vineyards where the winery is currently located were bought in 1990 and in 2003 the construction of the winery was started, being inaugurated in 2005.The name comes from the old Vilarnau castle which can be found on the banks of the river Anoia and which formed part of the Subirats castle, where the vineyards can be found today.
The Vilarnau estate is situated 6km outside of Sant Sadurni D’Anoia in the highest point of the area Espiells, 200m above sea level. High altitudes contribute to a slower maturation of the grape, which produces wines with higher acidity contributing to a more balanced ageing. The estate is nestled at the foot of the Montserrat mountain range, where the vineyards experience a mediterranean climate, as they are protected from the cold winds of the Pyrenees by the Montserrat mountains in the north and in the south by the Serrelada coastline. The soil is formed by a lime-arcillous layer which provides a balanced base for the vines.
What is Trencadis?
"Trencadís" is a kind of mosaic that was used in the modernist artistic movement in Catalonia, created from tiny fragments of broken ceramic tiles, roof tiles or crockery. The technique is also known as “pique assiette”, in French. The catalan architects Antoni GaudÍ and Josep MarÍa Pujol used “trencadÍs” in many of their designs, the most famous probably being “Parc Güell in Barcelona. Vilarnau’s proximity to Barcelona (not just geographic but also spiritual) means it was natural for this artistic resource used by the winery. As a result some of our cavas are dressed as follows.
