What Are Mooncakes?
Mooncakes are traditional Chinese pastries usually consumed during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is held on 15 August in Chinese calendar (our 21 September in 2021) and typically involves families gathering together to share mooncakes during moon watching.
Mooncakes were said to originate from Yuen Dynasty. A revolution was rising to overthrow the monarchy. On this date (the 15th of August, on the lunar calendar), people left paper messages inside the cakes and exchange them with one another to keep contact. We celebrate this form of communication and the strong bond of community still today..
In traditional Chinese culture, the roundness symbolises completeness and togetherness; a full moon symbolises prosperity and reunion for the whole family. Round mooncakes complement the harvest moon in the night sky at the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Obviously, the mooncake is not just 'food', but also has a profound meaning deep in the Chinese's hearts, symbolising a spiritual feeling. At Mid-Autumn Festival people eat mooncakes together with their family, or present mooncakes to relatives or friends, to express love and best wishes.
