On a wholegrain diet? 

Here is an addition to your everyday brown rice or wholewheat. We are so used to eating rolled oats or steel cut oats but don't forget that oat is a grain, just like wheat and rice! 
Oat groats are the whole oat berry that has had the tough hull removed. The bran and germ are intact, which means it's very high in fiber and nutrients.
Try cooked whole oats for a new texture and flavor instead of your rice and wheat.
It is another great source of fiber and also phytonutrients, which are plant compounds with beneficial effects on health!

If you have a grain mill, grinding the whole oats will make the freshest oat flour! 
Remember, the moment a whole grain is cut or grind it starts to oxidize so the best is to use freshly ground flour for any flour.

How to use whole oats

Whole oats are a great replacement from rice and you can use in risotto, pilaf recipes or cooked them and mix with your salads.
How to cook whole oat is simple! 


1 cup whole oats
3 cups water or stock (for a creamier texture please make this 4 cups) 
A pinch of salt
1. Soak the whole oats for at least 1 hour (ideally, overnight!) and rinse well.
2. Combine the oats and water and bring the water and oats to a boil over high heat. Keep an eye on the pot so that you can catch it before it boils over.
3. When the oats has reached a boil, lower the heat to a low simmer for 45-60 minutes. The oat is done when it has doubled in volume and is soft yet chewy. Add more water if the pan becomes dry before the oat has finished cooking; check every 5 minutes until it reaches the desired chewiness.
